Connections between GTE and Ameritech seem to be having problems. We are not able to make any calls into GTE areas from Sheboygan. This is affecting people trying to access the Internet from Plymouth, Random Lake and New Holstein. This problem started about 11:15am today. We received additional information as of 3:30pm that the cause is a fiber cut which affects a number of the interconnections between the two phone companies. Ameritech is supposed to be working on it, but there is no estimate for how long it will take.

** AMERITECH UPDATE **
At 11:30am today we will be making the first change to our servers with Ameritech. Our only options were today or sometime next week and we felt that it was necessary to select today so that we can make progress on the problem. We were told that the entire outage should last between 15-30 minutes, during which time any people dialing into the locations served by our Milwaukee site will not be able to connect. We will update everybody as to the results of this first step.
Monday, April 17th, 2000
We have added an additional 24 lines to the Plymouth location bringing the total number of lines in that area to 240! We constantly monitor our line usage and will order lines for cities as the demand dictates.

From approximately 5:15pm - 8:30pm we experienced a complete outage that would not have allowed customers to get connected. There was a planned power outage in our Milwaukee location. It was scheduled from 6am-6pm, so we cutover to generator power at 5:30am. This worked fine and we should not have experienced any outage, however Ameritech did not backup their equipment with generators and once their battery backup power ran out out connections were all dropped.

We have trouble tickets in and hope to get the problem resolved shortly.

We have added an additional 23 lines to our Sheboygan location, bringing the total number of lines up to 322! This was done due to increased demand as it gets colder outside. We will add additional lines to other cities as needed. All of the other cities currently have enough capacity.

Our Appleton POP is now up and running. This covers a fairly large calling area and details of the areas covered can be found on our Services Page. In order to get up and running we are offering all of our customer DOUBLE referral credits through the end of the year for all new accounts referred to us in this area! To make it easier for customers in that area to signup we have teamed with Altimate Computer Solutions to provide a local signup location. They are located downtown at 305 E. College Avenue.

The memory again appears to be causing our system problems. The main server was up and down three times between 1:15am and 3:30am this morning. We have removed the additional RAM again and expect that this will clear up the problem. We will work with our hardware/software vendors to get this issue cleared up and determine the cause of the problem.

Excel.Net offices will be closed Monday July 5th for the holidays. We wish everybody a safe and happy weekend! We will be open normal hours on July 4th (12pm-6pm) and will reopen Tuesday morning at 8am.
We will be putting the new RAM back into the server on Tuesday, July 6th at 12:15am. This will cause the main server to be unavailable for about 30-45 minutes. If you are connected prior to the shutdown, you will most likely be able to keep using everything except e-mail and our home page.

The storms on Sunday evening(6/6) through Monday morning (6/7) did appear to cause some outages. Most of these were very breif, however our Random Lake location has been without power since about midnight. All of the other areas at this point are functioning properly. We would expect that power will be restored in that area as quickly as possible and when that happens the dialup service should be available immediately.
Also, Saturday morning at approximately 10:30am our main server was unavailable for about 30-45 minutes. We are not sure as to the cause of this lockup at this point and will be investigating it further. This would have made it impossible to login if you were not online before it happened. You would also have been unable to retreive e-mail or view our website.

Our manufacturer has released a new version of the modem code which is supposed to be more reliable and provider for higher connection rates as well as clearing up some compatibility issues with specific modems. We are therefore planning to upgrade our modems starting Friday, May 7th at 11:00pm. If you are online at the time of the upgrades you will most get knocked off the system temporarily. You should however be able to dial right back into the system and get back online.
This is also a good time to remind all of you that it helps to update your modems as well. The modem manufacturers have been releasing updates to the modem drivers and firmware on a fairly regular basis. You should visit your manufacturers web site and see if updates are available for your modem as well. One very good source for information on 56K modems (with links to vendors sites) is:

FIBER CUT! ETA: 5/5/1999 6-9am!
Our provider is reporting another fiber cut between Milwaukee and Chicago. Again, our provider has re-routed all traffic over their Madison-to-Chicago DS3, but again the performance on that link is poor. You may experience slow response times or time-out errors while accessing any non-Excel.Net services (web pages outside of Excel.Net, ICQ, AIM, etc).
We will update this page with any new developments, ETAs and other important information. We apoligize for the inconvenience!

As of approximately 1:00am this morning our high speed data line connecting Manitowoc to Sheboygan has been experiencing problems. Data is either being passed very slowly or not at all. We have contacted Ameritech regarding this and it should be getting fixed. We will post updated information as it becomes available.
This problem has been resolved as of approximately 12:00pm today. It was found to be a faulty piece of hardware and has been replaced. During the investigation of this problem it is possible that people in the Plymouth and Random Lake sites may have experienced brief outages as well, because they are using some of the shared hardware that Manitowoc is on. We apologize for any inconvenience that this caused.
Wednesday, March 24th, 1999
A fiber cut between Milwaukee and Chicago has forced our provider to route all of their traffic over their Madison link. However, this has saturated a link just outside of our provider's Madison network, resulting in poor performance (slow downloads, high ping times, etc). We have no ETA for a fix to the fiber cut. Keep checking our web pages for more details as they become available!
Newsletter #21 was e-mailed out at about 9:20pm. Still no updates on when the fiber cut will be repaired

The entire city of Sheboygan experienced a power outage today from approximately 3:00pm until about 5:00pm. All that we know for sure at this time is that it extended over the entire city and even some of the surrounding cities. Our backup power supplies did kick in, but were not able to keep the servers running during the entire time. This meant that if you tried logging in you would probably have gotten the modem to answer but the server to verify your name and password was not up. Power has been restored and everything should be back up and running.
Monday, March 8th, 1999
We have completed the server upgrades and everything appears to be running smoothly. Ameritech has completed the installation of our digital lines for Manitowoc and we will be making the updates tomorrow morning between 6am and 7am. There will be a brief outage in the Manitowoc location as the lines are converted over.
Thursday, February 18th, 1999
New Holstein is up and running as of today. GTE has completed work on the lines and we have dialed into the new site. The telephone number for this location is (920) 898-9130. If that is a local call for you, update your dialing software to access it! If you have friends or relatives in that area looking for access, please let them know. Also, make sure they tell us that you sent them so that you get the $5 referral credit on your next bill!

Our provider is reporting a fiber cut that has taken down their Chicago link. The outage began around 2:40pm. This will affect your connections to the Internet by preventing you from accessing anything outside of our and our provider's network...Yahoo, chatting, ICQ, etc. We expect our provider to route traffic over alternative, slower links until the primary lines can be brought back up.
Our provider reports that most of the fiber lines between Milwaukee and Chicago have been cut by a company installing fiber for AT&T. The cut occured in Gurnee, Illinois, in two separate places a mile apart. AT&T has technicians working on the problem, but they have to trench the new fiber for the entire mile. ETA is estimated at two or more hours.
We just got this note from our provider...the current "estimated time of completion" is midnight tonight. This ETC came from AT&T, the ones responsible for fixing the problem. Here's the official version from AT&T:
Between approximately 3 and 3:30pm CST,
Qwest Communications cut through working
and protection fiber for all long distance
carrier's utilizing TCG's conduit between
Milwaukee and Chicago. There were three (3)
separate cuts through the conduit requiring
approximately 1 mile of fiber to be replaced
and spliced. An ETC is midnight CST. All
reroute options have been exhausted. Further
updates will be provided upon receipt.
Check back here for the lastest news on this problem. Thank you.

We have added an additional 24 lines to the Plymouth site bringing the total up to 120! This should easily take care of the additional demand that the change in weather brings. In addition we have lines ordered from Sheboygan and Fond du Lac which will be installed next week.
Thursday, October 29th, 1998
Due to increased usage of the news servers our news provider is in the process of installing new machines. These new machines should result in a performance increase of 10 times! During the transition to the new servers there will be times that the servers are unavailable. Please bear with that the performance jump should make it worth while.
Tuesday, September 29th, 1998
From our provider: There appears to be a major disruption in service via several carriers to the West Coast of the US. We are seeing network behaviors on the backbone which would indicate a major fiber cut, or similar disruption, involving such carriers as SprintLink, BBN planet and others. The disruptions are not affecting all sites, but many. You should still be able to send and receive mail without problems.

Our modem manufacturer has released the update for our modems to take us to the ITU v.90 standard. In addition to this there are a number of other fixes and enhancements made which we feel are important to get loaded. We will begin upgrading our modems this evening at 11pm. During the upgrade you may be temporarily knocked off the system, however you should be able to dial right back up and get connected.

Excel.Net offices will be closed on Monday, September 7th in observance of Labor day. Our offices will also close at 3pm on Saturday, September 12th so that all of our employees can attend the company picnic. Have a nice Labor Day weekend!
Beginning at approximately 8:00pm this evening our provider began experiencing problems. We have contacted them and they are working to get this corrected. We would expect that things should be back to normal shortly. At about 9:30pm things appear to be back to normal!
Thursday, August 20th, 1998
We will be performing system upgrades on 8/21 starting at 11:00pm. The first update will be to install a larger battery backup unit (UPS) for our main servers. Our home page, sending/receiving e-mail, and uploading files to our server will not be available during the upgrade. This should last until about midnight. We will then be applying updates to our dialup servers which will last until approximately 12:45am. If you are online at that point you will get disconnected, but should be able to dial right back into the server.

This morning at about 5:45-6:30am we experienced a power outage in the Plymouth location. At about 11:45am our access provider had an outage. This lasted until approximately 3:00pm. The system came up and down a number of times during this period.
We will also be performing a hardware upgrade to our modem servers on August 4th and 5th in an effort to improve connection speeds. This will take place at 11:00pm each evening. On the 4th we will be upgrading Manitowoc and Sheboygan and on the 5th Fond du Lac. Plymouth, Newburg and Jackson have all been upgraded already.

Our upstream provider experienced difficulties this afternoon. This caused sites to either load extremely slow or not at all. They have corrected the situration, however it will be necessary for them to upgrade some items this weekend. They will be rebooting the primary router on Saturday, July 4th at 3:30am. The outage is expected to last approximately 5 minutes.

At approximately 8:25am we believe that the phone lines in the Plymouth area went down. We were not able to call the lines or any individuals in that area to find out what was happening. Some of the phone lines were restored by about 9:30am and the remaining lines came up at about 10:00am. We would guess that last evenings storms had something to do with it but do not have any details.

We would like to apologize to all of our customers who had difficulties accessing our system on May 26th between approximately 2:00pm and 3:00pm. We are currently testing a system which started looping and caused the system to halt. Unix systems are not like PC's where you can just press the reset key and they start right back up. It was necessary to perform some recovery steps before turning it back online. Everything should be OK at this point. Again we apologize for the inconvenience.

Harold will be retiring at the end of the month. We would like to thank Harold for all of the time he has spent helping numerous customers with their questions. We will be having a retirement party for him on May 29th and the office will be closed during the 7pm-10pm hours. Happy retirement!
We will be changing our Sunday hours effective immediately to 7pm-10pm. We have found that in the summer calls are significantly decreased as people spend time outside. When fall comes around we will revert back to the 12pm-6pm hours to handle the additional call volume. Hope that you all have an enjoyable summer.
Friday, April 10th, 1998
We have completed the installation of 24 additional lines in both the Plymouth and Sheboygan locations. We apologize for any busy signals that you may have received while they were on order. We will work to better anticipate line needs in the future.

There was a brief outage in both the Plymouth and Manitowoc sites this afternoon. It started about 2:45pm and lasted until 3:30pm. The router that connects these two cities to the Sheboygan site stopped responding and needed to be power cycled to start back up. We apologize for the inconvenience.

As of early last week we have placed orders for additional lines in both the Sheboygan and Plymouth locations due to the increased usage these areas have been receiving. We will be adding 24 lines to each location bringing the total in Sheboygan to 168 and Plymouth to 96! We apologize for any problems you may have experienced over the past couple of weeks in the evening hours. We will be enhancing our line ordering procedures to take into account the extended delay we now experience with the digital lines as compared to the standard phone lines.

Our terminal server and modem manufacturer has released an update to the code that is being used. The new code is supposed to contain a number of fixes to the modems which assist in making more reliable and higher speed connections. Therefore, as we feel this is very important, we will be placing the upgrades onto the units this evening. The upgrade will take place 1/29/98 at 1:00am. If you are logged in at that time you will get kicked off the system while the units are rebooted. This entire process should only take approximately 15 minutes at which time the system will be ready again for use.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding on this upgrade. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
Sunday, January 25th, 1998
The e-mail server which allows you to retrieve messages from our server and download them to your server went down on Sunday afternoon at approximately 1:30pm until about 2:20pm. We are not sure as to the exact cause of the outage and will need to investigate the log files a little further. It appears to be running properly at this time and you should not be experiencing any further problems.
We apologize for the inconvenience, please let us know if you have any further questions. Well, now it is off to the Super Bowl... GO PACK!

1. JOB OPENING - Excel.Net, Inc. is seeking an individual for employment immediately as a technical support representative. The opening would be for the afternoon shift totalling about 30 hours a week. The job will primarily consist of telephone support, with additional general office items during off peak calling times. Optimally, the individual should be able to work Monday through Friday from 1:00pm - 7:00pm. This will cover the current shift and expand our support hours so that we do not have the gap from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. The minimum that we will be looking for is Monday through Friday from 1:00pm - 5:00pm. General computer and Internet experience is beneficial, however we will provide training in our software and support areas to get you up to speed. We offer competitive wages, free Internet access, and a retirement savings plan to all employees. If you are interested, please e-mail me at email@example.com with a summary of your computer experience, the hours you would be available to work, and when would be a good time for an interview.
2. SUPER BOWL - As we all know. my favorite team, the Green Bay Packers will be going back for another Super Bowl on Sunday January 25th. In order to give our employees the opportunity to watch them (and who would call in with support questions during the Super Bowl anyhow :) we will be closing down the office at 4:30pm.
3. WEB SITE - It appears that when we put our new web pages online that a number of our Windows 3.1 customers were seeing an overall slowdown in system performance. We believe that this was because of the scrolling text that we had next to the globe. We have rewritten this portion of the page to address that problem and believe that it has been corrected. If you are still seeing a slowdown please take the time to fill out our "Submit a Question" page at: http://www.excel.net/Admin/Support/faqsubmit.html and provide us with as many details about your system as possible. Another suggestion is that you visit the Microsoft web site and download the latest version of Internet Explorer (either 3.02a, or if you are daring - the beta 4.0 preview 2) at:http://www.microsoft.com/ie/

Our upstream provider in Milwaukee is experiencing some difficulties. Earlier today there was a fire in the basement of their building and they were forced to switch over to their backup power supplies. To conserve their power supplies the news servers were shut down. It now appears the the connection has been dropped entirely at approximately 11:30pm on Thursday evening. We are able to reach other Sheboygan sites, but nothing beyond Sheboygan. We would expect that this problem will be resolved shortly and that the service will be restored. Let us know if you have any questions regarding this outage. Thank you for your patience during this time.

First, beginning at around 4:30pm an Thursday, December 11th, and lasting until approximately 10:00am on Friday our network suffered a major performance hit, meaning that you probably were getting everything VERY slowly. What actually happened is that we were colocating a server for a company and they came under attack from an irate customer. The customer flooded the network with bogus packets causing the entire link from our provider to become slow. This morning our provider filtered out the flooding and the network speed was restored. We have since cancelled that businesses account with our company as we do not need to have problems like this and the server was carrying some questionable material.
Second (this is the good news), we added an additional 12 lines to our Plymouth location bringing the total up to 72! We will continue monitoring all of our sites and adding additional lines as needed.
Finally, this evening (Friday) between 7:07pm and 7:48pm the Plymouth lines were down due to a power outage. We are not sure what the cause of the outage was, as when we went out to the building we did not find any problems in the building so we are assuming the outage was external.
Wednesday, December 3rd, 1997
On Thursday, December 4th, we will be converting the lines in our Plymouth location over to the 56K modems. At the same time we will be moving our offices to a new location, so the Plymouth site will be down. We are planning to start taking the equipment down around 5:00am and hope to have things back up and running by 7:00am.
The one part of the move that I fear will take the longest is getting the 892-7005 number pointed to the new 56K modem lines. Should this be the case, for tomorrow only the telephone number 892-7123 will dial into the 56K modems.
At this point we will also be increasing our line count from 48 to 60 which should help out in the evening when it is busy. If this is not enough it will be fairly quick for us to increase that to 72 lines as the wiring has already been run.
Monday, November 17th, 1997
Starting about 10:00am on Monday November 17th it appears that our dialup line had some problems. There was an excessive amount of static on the lines making it difficult to get connected. We contacted Ameritech and the lines are being looked at for possible problems. Although we have not heard back from them yet as to possible causes for the problem, it does appear to be resolved (about 2:30pm). We apologize for the inconvenience, please let us know if you have any further questions.

Ameritech changed the cutover date for our Sheboygan and Manitowoc locations Friday November 7th at 6:00am. There may be a slight interruption of service at that point, but it should only last for a few minutes. We have decided to keep a very small number of analog lines in the Sheboygan office, just in case we need to use them. We will only give that number out if people are not able to connect with the 56K modems.
Fond du Lac has been cutover since Thursay, October 30th and we have only seen a very small number of problems. Ameritech however will be making another change to those lines November 4th at 6:00am and will bring them down for a short time.
Finally, Livingston has released an upgrade to the code which controls these units. We will be putting the new version of the code on at 11:45pm this evening November 3rd. We will have to reboot each of the machines after applying the code. If you are on at that point you will get disconnected but should be able to reconnect almost immediately.
Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding this information. We appreciate all of the feedback and help you have provided during our testing. Thanks!
